THE lawyer of whistleblower Benhur Luy on Friday renewed calls for businesswoman Janet Napoles to be detained in a regular jail.

In an interview, lawyer Raji Mendoza said keeping Napoles in the Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna is too costly for the government.

The government is also paying for Napoles' transportation from the police detention facility to the Makati Regional Trial Court branch 150 to face the serious illegal detention case filed by Luy and back.

"We should stop spending unnecessarily for detention prisoners. It's waste of taxpayers money, let her stay in Makati jail," he said, adding Napoles has not made a commitment to return her loot, which was sourced from the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam.

Napoles, the scam's alleged mastermind, stayed at the Ospital ng Makati for almost two months because she underwent surgery to remove her uterus and ovaries.

The court sent her back to Fort Sto. Domingo on Thursday. (Sunnex)
