IT WILL be rainy in most parts of the country on Tuesday due to the southwest monsoon enhanced by a low pressure area (LPA), according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In an interview, Pagasa weather forecaster Connie Dadivas said that as of 4 a.m. , an LPA was spotted some 310 km north northeast of Laoag City or at 65 km northwest of Basco, Batanes (21.0ºN 121.5ºE).

Citing the agency’s numerical models, Dadivas said the weather disturbance has a chance to intensify into a tropical depression but will intensify outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

She added that the potential cyclone is expected to exit PAR within the day headed towards Japan.

Pagasa expects two to three tropical cyclones this month, wherein the first one will be named “Ester.”

However, Dadivas said due to the southwest monsoon or "hanging habagat" enhanced by the LPA, the rest of Luzon including Metro Manila will experience moderate to heavy rains.

The rest of the country, she noted, will continue to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers due to localized thunderstorms.

She added that heavy rains will be experienced early Tuesday morning in most parts of the country including Metro Manila due to monsoon rains.

Meanwhile, Dadivas said there is a possibility that the onset of rainy season will commence this week.

"Maaaring within the day or anyday this week magaannounce na tayo ng onset of rainy season kung na meet na yung criteria sa ibang stations," Dadivas said.

Aside from the presence of the southwest monsoon, another criteria before Pagasa can declare the beginning of the wet season includes the amount of rainfall, which must register a total of 25 millimeters or more, for five consecutive days in major Pagasa weather stations.

The southwest monsoon is the dominant weather system during the rainy season while the easterlies or warm winds from the east are the prevailing wind system during summer.

In its advisory, Pagasa said moderate to strong winds coming from the southwest will prevail over the northern and western sections of Luzon and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.

Light to moderate winds coming from the southwest will prevail over the Visayas and the rest of Luzon and from the south to southwest over Mindanao with slight to moderate seas. (PNA)
