MANILA (Updated) - Security forces on Wednesday morning arrested a person suspected of playing a key role in financing the activities of the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group in Mindanao.
Khair Mundos was arrested by a composite team from the PNP's Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Army Intelligence Security Group and National Intelligence Coordinating Agency around 9:30 a.m. at A. Bonifacio St. in Barangay San Dionisio, Parañaque City.
CIDG chief Director Benjamin Magalong said Mundos was arrested by virtue of arrest warrants for multiple murder, multiple frustrated murder and multiple attempted murder.
"He was arrested in his brother's house, doon siya nagtatago kasi ang sabi niya mainit daw siya sa Mindanao at kilala daw siya doon," Magalong said.
"Ganun naman kapag mainit sila sa Mindanao nagpupunta sila dito sa Manila pag dito naman sila mainit babalik sila doon sa Mindanao," he added.
Mundos is a finance officer of the Abu Sayyaf, which is notorious in kidnapping, beheading and bombing activities.
He is among the Filipino militants wanted by the United States government, which has offered $500,000 for his arrest. He has reportedly received funds from Jemaah Islamiyah and al-Qaeda to finance Abu Sayyaf activities.
The CIDG chief said they are still checking if the arrested fugitive is still connected to the terrorist group.
He was previously arrested in 2004 but was rescued by his comrades from the Kidapawan City jail in Cotabato in 2007.
Mundos is temporarily detained at the CIDG National Capital Region office in Camp Crame in Quezon City while awaiting the commitment order to be issued by the court.
Meanwhile, CIDG-NCR chief Senior Superintendent Roberto Fajardo said that despite the arrest of the Abu Sayyaf leader no imminent threat has been monitored in connection with the country's celebration of its Independence Day on June 12.
"So far wala pa namang threat kami na namomonitor na threat against peace and order para bukas in line with the arrest of Mundos," he said.
The 116th Independence Day on Thursday will be marked with simultaneous celebrations in different parts of the country. (Third Anne Peralta/VR/Sunnex)
