MALACANANG on Friday clarified that President Benigno Aquino III was not discriminating entertainers from entering politics but he merely wanted the Filipino voters to choose candidates based on their qualifications.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte made the clarification after Aquino, during his Independence Day speech in Naga City, Camarines Sur on Thursday, urged the Filipinos to elect officials who can fight for their interest two years from now and not just based on who could entertain them.

"Ang hamon sa atin: Piliin ang mga kandidatong kayang ipaglaban ang interes ng bawat mamamayan, sa harap ng anumang hamon. Hindi natin kailangan ng magaling bumigkas ng script, mahusay sumayaw, o kaya magaling kumanta. Pananagutan nating mag-iwan ng mas makatarungan at mas maunlad na Pilipinas kaysa atin pong dinatnan," he said.

"Hindi ito patama sa isang klase ng -- sa isang grupo pero more of what the President was saying was that: huwag lang 'yon 'yung tignan natin at hindi lang dapat iyon iyong kanilang kuwalipikasyon kung sakaling merong tumakbo na mula sa ganung industriya," Valte said in a press briefing.

Asked that Aquino's statement might boomerang on him considering that his sister, actress-television host Kris Aquino, could run for a local post and the administration Liberal Party might also field up personalities from show business in 2016 polls, Valte said she could not answer for the political plans of the presidential sister and that of the President's party.

"I'm not quite sure about the plans of the Presidential sister. I am also, at this point, not aware of any candidates that are being fielded by the President’s party in the 2016 elections," she said. (SDR/Sunnex)
