(Updated) GOVERNMENT security forces have arrested two members of the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf who were tagged in the kidnapping of two foreign nationals during a raid in Zamboanga City.

The Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) named the two suspects as Jimmy Nurilla, alias Doc; and Bakrin Haris, who were identified as active members of the Abu Sayyaf operating in the city.

In a statement, PAOCC said the two also have links with the Abu Sayyaf group operating in Basilan, under Furuji Indama and Khair Mundos.

Soldiers and policemen arrested Mundos in Paranaque last week.

Nurilla and Haris were nabbed by joint security forces from PAOCC, Philippine National Police and military in Sangali village on Monday by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by a Zamboanga City court for kidnapping and serious illegal detention.

A co-accused in the case, one Walid, was able to escape.

Nurilla and Haris are said to be part of the group that kidnapped retired Australian serviceman Warren Rodwell and American teenager Kevin Lunsmann.

Rodwell was snatched by Abu Sayyaf men in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay province in December 2011. He was then brought to Basilan where he was freed by his captors 15 months later after a ransom was paid.

Meanwhile, Lunsmann and her Filipina-American mother Gerfa Yeatts Lunsmann were abducted by the Abu Sayyaf also in July 2001 in Zamboanga City and then brought to Basilan. The mother was released three months later while her son escaped in December 2001.

Nurilla and Haris are also implicated in the kidnapping of a Filipino teacher and a businessman.

"The operation also resulted in the seizure of some subversive documents and explosives from the arrested personalities," said PAOCC, referring to Nurilla and Haris. (VR/Sunnex)
