AFTER imposing a total ban in the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Iraq, the Philippine government is now temporarily suspending the processing and deployment of newly hired workers bound for the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

Based on Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Governing Board Resolution 13-2014, they are now stopping deployment of new hires in the Kurdistan Region after the crisis alert level 2 (restriction phase) was raised there.

"The POEA Governing Board has decided to suspend, for the meantime, the deployment of newly-hired overseas Filipino workers to the Iraqi Kurdistan Region because of the growing threats to the security situation in the said region," said Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz in a statement.

Deployment of returning workers in the Kurdistan region, though, remains open under crisis alert level 2.

Earlier, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) raised crisis alert level 2 in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region from crisis alert level 1.

POEA records show that there are 75 OFWs working in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region as of 2013.

The rest of Iraq has been placed under crisis alert level 4 owing to the unstable security situation in the country with Filipino nationals already being repatriated mandatorily. (HDT/Sunnex)
