THE chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center has been relieved from his post for allowing the visitors of detained senators Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada and Ramon "Bong Revilla to stay beyond the visiting hours over the weekend, the PNP announced Thursday.

The Headquarters Support Service (HSS), which conducted the pre-charge investigation, found that Superintendent Mario Malana failed to implement standing rules and regulations of the custodial service and for failure to comply with specific legal instructions to immediately inform or update the higher officials of what is happening on his unit.

"He was administratively relieved yesterday (July 3)," PNP Public Information Office (PIO) chief Reuben Theodore Sindac said.

Last Sunday (June 29), several visitors of the two senators who arrived around 9 a.m. reportedly stayed until 1 a.m. of next day, Monday (June 30), beyond the visiting hours. It was allegedly because Estrada and his wife celebrated their wedding anniversary inside the facility.

PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima earlier asked Malana to explain what had happened.

However, the HSS said Malana "was not able to come up with a good reason or cause for that incident."

Superintendent Peter Limbaoan will assume Malana's post.

Malana run the risk of being suspended from service for a minimum of 30 days without pay and allowances if found guilty of the charges.

Meantime, Sindac questioned the contents of the manifesto signed by 57 detainees of the PNP custodial center, which states their disapproval on the continued detention of Revilla and Estrada in Camp Crame.

"If ever may effect sa manifesto, ang isang tinitingnan, paano nila (detainees) nagawa 'yun, kaya siguro naghigpit din. How were they able to gather 58 signatures? Supposed to be hiwa-hiwalay 'yung mga detainees doon, by sectors yun, hindi sila (detainees) nagkikitaan," Sindac said.

Sindac said the PNP Custodial Center will implement tighter security to avoid violation of visiting hours. (Sunnex)
