MANILA (Updated) -- Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, who surrendered Friday on plunder and graft charges, is temporarily detained at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital in Camp Crame due to his medical condition, a police spokesperson said.

Senior Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac, PNP Public Information Office chief, said that after the booking process, Enrile's blood pressure was recorded at 200/90 with a pulse rate of 84 beats per minute.

"Will have temporary hospital confinement for further observation due to the medical condition of the subject," he said.

Sindac said the doctors who checked on the condition of the senator found out that he has heart problem, which requires medical attention.

The 90-year-old senator was diagnosed with hypertension, vertigo, anemia and high cholesterol level.

Sindac said Enrile would be detained in a specialty ward equipped with an air conditioner, a single bed and a restroom with shower. The senator will be monitored by nurses in three shifts and a doctor.

After undergoing booking procedure, which include medical and physical examination, finger printing and mug shot at the PNP multi-purpose hall, Enrile was transferred to the PNP hospital on-board an ambulance.

The Senate Minority Leader gave his daughter, Katrina Enrile, a warm and tight hug before boarding the ambulance.

Enrile will spend his weekend in the hospital, as his arrest warrant will be returned to the Sandiganbayan on Monday, Sindac said.

Enrile turned himself in to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Camp Crame around 5:29 p.m., hours after the Sandiganbayan ordered his arrest.

Enrile requested to PNP that his mug shot "be kept confidential."

"We kindly request that in case Senator Enrile shall be detained in your facilities, any mug shot or photograph of the booking process be kept confidential, or it's taking altogether dispensed with," the letter read.

"It is our position that a mug shot or any photograph taken during the booking process should merely be used for record identification processes," it added.

The PNP agreed and refused to release copies of Enrile's mug shots particularly to the media.

The former Senate President is the third senator to be prosecuted on plunder and graft charges over alleged misuse of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

Also arrested earlier for the same charges were Senators Ramon "Bong" Revilla and Jinggoy Estrada, who are now detained at the PNP custodial center in Camp Crame.

Enrile was arrested on suspicion of receiving kickbacks from the scam that diverted millions of pesos from PDAF allotted to lawmakers.

Enrile's former aide Jessica "Gigi" Reyes, a co-accused in the plunder charge, also turned herself in to Sandiganbayan Friday afternoon.

The third division issued a commitment order for Reyes at the Quezon City Bureau of Jail Management and Penology but the prison management is given three days to comment on the order. Reyes will be detained the anti-graft court's temporary jail pending the BJMP's reply.

Aside from Enrile and Reyes, the court also ordered the arrest of Ronald John Lim and John Raymund De Asis, the nephew and driver, respectively, of businesswoman Janet Napoles, the alleged pork barrel scam mastermind.

Napoles faces plunder and graft cases in the pork barrel scam. She has been detained at the Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, for the serious illegal detention of pork barrel scam main whistleblower Benhur Luy. (Sunnex)
