SENATOR Juan Ponce Enrile is set to undergo cardiac examination on Tuesday afternoon at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital in Camp Crame, where he is detained on plunder and graft charges related to the pork barrel scam, a PNP spokesperson said.

Enrile was originally set to undergo two-dimensional echocardiogram (2-D echo) with doppler at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday but the senator's camp requested to move it at 6 p.m. of same day.

"Hiniling ng senador na isailalim na lamang siya sa tinatawag na two-dimensional echocardiogram kapag kaunti na lamang ang tao partikular ng alas-sais mamayang gabi," PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac said.

Enrile surrendered to the PNP on Friday after the Sandiganbayan has ordered his arrest for plunder and graft charges in relation to the alleged misuse of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

He has been hospitalized since Friday night due to his fluctuating blood pressure and frail condition.

Sindac said the Enrile's blood pressure on Friday night until Sunday reached 200/90, however, it improved on Monday at 140/70.

As 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, Enrile's was recorded at 135/60 with a pulse rate of 61 beats per minute, Sindac said.

The police spokesperson said the PNP cardiologist who checked Monday the condition of the 90-year-old senator recommended 2D-Echo, an ultrasound test used for an in-depth examination of the heart.

Doppler is a special part of the ultrasound exam that assesses blood flow (direction and velocity). Doppler exam shows the flow of blood as it makes its way through and out of the heart. One would hear "swishing" or "whooshing" sounds during this part of the procedure.

Over the weekend, Enrile was brought to the Asian Eye Institute in Makati City for the treatment of his macular degeneration, a condition that usually affects older adults and which causes blindness.

Sindac said Enrile will be taken again to the said eye center July 12.

"Wala naman problema at hindi din ganoon kalaki ang nagastos dun sa paglabas niya (Enrile) nung weekend kasi malapit lang naman at 'yung mga gamot niya (Enrile) sa hospital siya din naman ang nagbabayad," Sindac said.

He said the PNP has maintained the tightened security at the PNP General Hospital where the senator has been detained. He said they only allow 60 visitors for Enrile with limited visiting hours.

"They have specifically requested na piling pili lang, list of 60 people ang pwede lang dumalaw sa kanya at specific given time kung pwede. Kasi hospital din naman yun, we should understand that the conditions there are different, we always put into consideration ang kanyang health," he said. (Sunnex)
