MANILA -- Typhoon Florita exited the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday morning, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported.

In its final weather bulletin issued at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Pagasa said that as of 9 a.m., the eye of Florita was located at 610 kilometers (km) north east of Basco Batanes.

The typhoon was packing maximum winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 220 kph.

Pagasa said Florita will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms over Palawan, Mindoro, Cavite, Bantagas, Zambales, and Bataan.

The weather bureau added that the rest of Luzon and Western Visayas will have occasional rains.

But while Typhoon Florita left the PAR Tuesday, it continued to move north northwest and has pounded across the southern Japanese islands of Okinawa, Japan, as residents took refuge from destructive winds, towering waves and storm surges.

The storm was due to hit the main Okinawan city of Naha Tuesday evening.

The national broadcaster said one woman had suffered a head injury due to the storm and one fisherman was missing after he was swept off a boat in seas near the southern island of Kyushu.

Officials said the storm could be one of the strongest to hit Japan in decades, generating waves up to 14 meters (46 feet) high.

Evacuation advisories were issued for some 500,000 people, and about 500 sought refuge in Naha's city hall, NHK reported. (Sunnex/With AP)
