THE Philippine National Police (PNP) has reduced the budget for the court appearances of Janet Napoles, the alleged mastermind in the pork barrel fund anomaly, a police spokesperson said Friday.

PNP Public Information chief Reuben Theodore Sindac said expenses, particularly on Napoles' trips from her detention cell at Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, to the Sandiganbayan in Quezon City have been reduced to P50,000 from P120,000 per trip.

"The PNP now employs around 50 to 70 policemen from the original 120 policemen tasked to escort her convoy," Sindac said.

Napoles has been detained at the Fort Sto. Domingo since surrendering in 2013 on serious illegal detention charges filed by her former aide, Benhur Luy, the main whistleblower in the pork barrel scam.

Napoles is a co-accused of senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. in their separate plunder cases before the Sandiganbayan. Napoles plead not guilty on separate charges.

Earlier, Sindac said keeping the high-risk detainees such as Napoles and the three senators is a straining the PNP's purse.

Every time Napoles would be taken out from the camp to attend hearings in Makati Regional Trial Court and Sandiganbayan, the PNP spends P120,000 to pay for security escort, gas, and food.

Meanwhile, Sindac said the PNP spends P40,000 for each court appearance of the three detained senators, where P27,000 is spent on food of more than 100 police escorts and P13,000 on gas. (Sunnex)
