NGCP: 84% Meralco customers still without power-A A +A

MANILA -- Around 86 percent of Manila Electric Co.'s (Meralco) consumers remain powerless after Typhoon Glenda (Rammasun) barreled through Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces Wednesday morning.
In a news briefing, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippine (NCGP) said that as of 1 p.m., 4.5 million of customers were still without power.
Meralco said generation plants in the south are unable to deliver power as NGCP Southern Luzon Grid remains out.
"We are currently assessing the extent of the damages in our distribution facilities including poles, transformers, wires and subtransmission lines," Meralco said in its Facebook account.
Typhoon Glenda, which was packing winds of up to 180 kilometers per hour (kph), toppled electric poles and transmission lines in the Southern Luzon, causing extensive damage to the Luzon grid.
Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla said the Department of Energy (DOE) has yet to fully assess the damage and did not give a definite time when the power will be restored.
"Meralco, NGCP, NEA (National Electrification Administration) have one mission: to put back power as quickly as we can," Petilla said. (Sunnex)
