THE Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has officially imposed a total deployment ban for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in war-torn Gaza Strip.

In separate resolutions, the POEA also banned newly hired OFWs from leaving for work in Israel and West Bank.

"The POEA Governing Board resolves to impose a total ban on the processing and deployment of all OFWs bound for Gaza Strip," said POEA Resolution 18-2014.

"The POEA Governing Board resolves to impose a temporary suspension on the processing and deployment of newly-hired OFWs to the West Bank," said POEA Resolution 19-2014.

"The POEA Governing Board resolves to impose a temporary suspension on the processing and deployment of newly hired OFWs to Israel," said POEA Resolution 20-2014.

However, the POEA said it will continue to allow the processing and deployment of vacationing/returning workers to Israel and the West Bank.

The total ban in the Gaza Strip came after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) raised crisis alert level 4 there last July 21.

Under alert level 4, a total ban on deploying OFWs in the Gaza Strip.

On the other hand, the partial deployment bans in Israel and the West Bank came after the DFA raised crisis alert level 2 in the two territories last July 21.

Under alert level 2, processing and deployment are only allowed for returning OFWs with existing employment contracts in Israel and the West Bank.

The crisis alert levels were brought by the growing security concerns in Israel and Palestine brought by the Israel – Hamas conflict. (HDT/Sunnex)
