CALBAYOG CITY, Samar -- Two boulders smashed into a shanty, killing a nine-month pregnant mother and her 12-year-old daughter on Saturday in a village along Maharlika Highway in this city.
Instantly killed were Marife Monteves, 37, and daughter Danica, of Barangay Cagnipa, a village about 27 kilometers from the city.
Other children Diana, 9, and Danilyn, 5, suffered only wounds and were brought to St. Camilus Hospital for treatment. The victims’ father, Danilo, 47, was unhurt.
Danilo, a farmer, said they were taking a rest around 1 p.m. when two boulders as big as a hut crashed into their house. The huge rock debris hit the shack where the victims were sleeping.
He said the heavy rain since Friday morning may have loosened the part of the rocky hill where the boulders about 80 meters up were located.
Although this is the first time an incident like this happened in their village, Danilo was aware it was prone to rock slides. Danilo’s family has been living at the hill’s foot since 1988.
As of press time Monday, village chief Sherwin Escala said that right now, the barangay is prioritizing the victims’ hospitalization and burial. Officials have yet to meet how much assistance they will extend to the family, he said.
Escala added that he will propose to the council a “no build zone” in the area and relocate the six families who live there to a safer location.
Roel Mejedo, who owns one of the houses, said his family is willing to transfer as long as he is assured of a place to relocate.
Meanwhile, Escala said another landslide occurred in their village, but no reported casualty. He also said he received reports that another incident happened in the village of Poblacion Bugtong.
Calbayog City, along with Samar towns Basey, Marabut, and Talalola, has been declared as prone to landslide by Mines and Geosciences. (Gerwin Babon/Sunnex)
