OVER 2,000 militant protesters marched on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City on Monday morning, hours ahead of the fifth State of the Nation Address (Sona) of President Benigno Aquino III, a police spokesperson said.

Quezon City Police District (QCPD) spokesperson Maricar Taqueban said the estimated crowd as of 12 noon is around 2,000 but the crowd is expected to reach 10,000 during Aquino's Sona at the House of Representatives at 3 p.m.

Militant groups such as Anakpawis urged Aquino to step-down from his post for his alleged involvement in the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP), which was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

"The president's plummeting performance rating was an early warning. Today marks the start of his inevitable political isolation. The president has only two choices-- be impeach or be ousted. Either way he has to go. The people are fed up with this "Tuwid na Daan" that certainly leads to nowhere," the group said in a statement.

The group said the anti-Sona rallies will proceed "rain or shine."

Taqueban said 3,700 police personnel sealed off areas near Sandiganbayan, Batasan Complex and Commonwealth Avenue to ensure that the protesters will not go beyond the allowed rally zone, which is along the Ever Gotesco Mall.

Taqueban said the local police will impose maximum tolerance.

"Kapag nagpumilit sila (rallyist) to go beyond sa mga nilagay natin na barikada our policemen will respond accordingly," she said.

The QCPD spokesperson said if the militants will become unmanageable, they will be arrested. (Sunnex)
