MANILA -- Pope Francis will visit the Philippines for the first time in January next year, church officials in Manila confirmed Monday.

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, in a press conference, said the pontiff will visit the country on January 15 to 19, 2015.

Tagle said that itinerary and other schedules of Pope Francis' visit will be announced later this year.

The pontiff is expected to visit Manila, including the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas, as well as the areas devastated by super typhoon "Yolanda" (Haiyan), the deadliest Philippine storm on record, in the Eastern Visayas.

The Archbishop of Manila said the theme for the Bishop of Rome's visit will be "Mercy and Compassion" and he urged the Catholic faithful to do "Corporal Works of Mercy" before the grand event.

Meanwhile, Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the government is all set to provide the necessary security and other safety concerns during Pope Francis' visit.

"We are working closely with the Papal Visit committee," Coloma said.

He added that Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. will lead the government side in preparing for the upcoming historical visit by the leader of the more than 1.2-billion Roman Catholics worldwide.

Tagle noted that the visit of Pope Francis will mark the 20th anniversary of the 1995 World Youth Day festivities in Manila, which was graced by the late pope and now St. John Paul II.

The event, which was recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records as largest Papal event, was also the last time a Pope visited the country. (Sunnex)
