MANILA -- Janet Napoles, the alleged brains in the pork barrel scam, was sent home from Sandiganbayan on Friday due to fever.

Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice and third division chairperson Associate Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang allowed Napoles to be excused from the hearing after her defense counsel, Dennis Buenaventura, informed the court that his client has fever for two consecutive days.

Napoles was in court Friday to attend the bail hearing of detained Senate Minority Floor Leader Juan Ponce Enrile, Napoles' co-accused in the plunder case related to the alleged misuse of Priority Development Assistance Fund.

Based on the assessment made by the Sandiganbayan resident physician, Napoles' body temperature was 37.73 degrees Celsius and has a slight fever while her blood pressure soared to 140 over 80.

Napoles arrived at the anti-graft court compound around 7 a.m. and returned to her detention cell in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, two hours later.

Earlier, third division senior member Associate Justice Samuel Martires asked the representatives from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) why Napoles was handcuffed when she was brought to the court since that practice was not being applied on the alleged pork barrel scam mastermind when she was detained in Fort Sto. Domingo in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

BJMP officials told Martires that it was part of their standard operating procedures (SOP) handcuff all accused or detainees under their custody while on their way to the court or on their way back to their detention facility.

Last week, the anti-graft court has ordered the transfer of Napoles inside the female dormitory of Camp Bagong Diwa after the third division granted the motion filed by the prosecution seeking her transfer to a regular jail ran by the BJMP.

Napoles was accused of engineering the diversion of PDAF of lawmakers to her bogus non-government organizations (NGOs). Napoles is also co-accused in separate graft cases filed against Senators Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada and Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. (Sunnex)
