MANILA -- The typhoon spotted outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) may enter the country’s territory by Monday or Tuesday, said the state weather bureau.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, Typhoon Halong was estimated at 1,340 kilometers east of Central Luzon, packing maximum winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 160 kph.

It is forecast to move west northwest at 10 kph, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The weather bureau said the typhoon will be named "Jose" once it enters the PAR.

It will not yet affect any part of the country because it is too far away, Pagasa added.

The agency warned though that Halong is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon that will induce more rains.

The southwest monsoon, which is associated with the occurrence of intermittent to continuous rains, is the prevailing wind system during the rainy season.

Pagasa said the southwest monsoon will bring occasional rains over Metro Manila, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), regions of Ilocos, Cordillera and the provinces of Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, Zambales and Bataan.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms, added Pagasa. (Sunnex/With PNA)
