McMahon wins Ironman race; Steffen defends title

CEBU CITY (Updated, 2:55 p.m.) – Canadian Brent McMahon ruled the pro men’s division of the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines on Sunday at the Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapu Lapu City.

McMahon, who had competed in the second Olympic triathlon at the 2004 Summer Olympics, finished the 1.9-kilometer swim, 90-kilometer bike and 21-kilometer run in 03:59:05. He was followed by Australian Sam Betten (04:07:30), who was the first to finish the swim leg. Casey Munro (04:13:18) came in third and Cameron Brown from New Zealand, one of this year’s crowd favorites, finished fourth in 04:15:44.

In the pro women’s category, Caroline ‘Xena’ Steffen defended her title and won the race in 04:32:34. Australians Rebecca Hoschke came in second at 04:38:34 and Belinda Granger came in third again at 04:48:32. (Sunnex)
