MANILA -- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised on Friday the alert level of Mayon volcano from 1 to 2 as the "magma is intruding at depth and that current conditions may eventually lead to a larger eruption."

Under alert level 2, the public is "strongly advised to be vigilant and desist from entering the six-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ)" to minimize risks from sudden explosions, rock fall and landslides.

In its bulletin, the Phivolcs reported that based on its visual observation of the volcano's summit crater on August 12, it discovered the growth of a new lava dome approximately 30 to 50 meters high.

The state volcanologists said the growth may be caused by a "very slight inflation or swelling" of the middle slopes of the edifice since the phreatic eruption last year.

On May 7, 2013, five mountain climbers, including one foreigner, were killed after Mayon volcano spewed ash.

In June 2013, the Phivolcs also raised alert level 1 due to the presence of fumes and visible crater glow.

The Phivolcs said it is closely monitoring the behavior of Mayon volcano. (Sunnex)
