MANILA -- The country’s First Family, along with the Filipino people, marked on Thursday the 31st death anniversary of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., father of President Benigno S. Aquino III.

President Aquino and his sisters Viel, Ballsy, and Kris arrived at the Manila Memorial Park in Sucat, Parañaque City Thursday morning to attend a Holy Mass for the late senator.

Before the First Family arrived, people visited the tombs of Ninoy and former President Corazon ‘Cory’ Aquino, mother of the current President.

Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff General Gregorio Pio Catapang was also seen visiting the grave. More visitors are expected to flock within the day.

The Ninoy Aquino Movement, led by former Senator Heherson Alvarez, also held its annual commemorative ceremonies at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to pay homage and preserve a big part of the Philippine democracy’s history.

Every August 21, the Philippines celebrates Ninoy Aquino Day to remember the assassination of Senator Aquino at the tarmac of the former Manila International Aiport (now NAIA), upon his return from self-exile in the United States on August 21, 1983.

His death triggered several protest actions that forced then President Ferdinand Marcos to call for snap elections in February 1986.

Reports of rampant cheating during the elections led to the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution that resulted in the ouster of the Marcos dictatorship and swept the late senator's widow, Corazon Aquino, to power.

The 1986 People Power Revolution is the world’s renowned non-violent revolution.

Twenty-four years later, the couple's only son, Benigno S. Aquino III, was elected President of the country in May 2010. (PNA/Sunnex)
