SOME leaders of the administration Liberal Party (LP) wanted to convene a meeting among their members to clarify issues on Constitutional amendments and term extension of President Benigno Aquino III.

In an interview at the Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque City after the commemoration of the 31st death anniversary of late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., Senate President Franklin Drilon said that he already endorsed the proposal of Budget Secretary Florencio Abad for the LP members to hold a meeting.

Asked of the agenda of the meeting, he said, "Para liwanagin na talagang ang sabi nga ng Pangulo ay hindi naman siya interesado sa second term, hindi siya interesado doon sa pag-amiyenda ng Saligang Batas during his term, so para matapos na itong usaping ito."

The issues on Charter change and lifting of the President's six-year single term cropped up when Aquino, in a recent television interview, expressed openness to amend the Constitution.

He also said that he would listen to the voice of his bosses, meaning the people, with regard to possible term extension.

Different interpretations came out following the President's statement.

Drilon said as far as Aquino was concerned, "he (President) was averse to any Constitutional change during his term."

The Senate President said he could not tell yet when the LP meeting would take place.

"Wala pang notice sa akin," he said. (SDR/Sunnex)
