MANILA -- The Filipino seaman suspected of acquiring the dreaded Ebola virus has been found negative of the disease.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), results of the medical examination done on the Filipino indicated that he is not suffering from the Ebola virus disease (EVD).

"Our Embassy in Nigeria reported that tests on the Filipino national with Ebola-like symptoms yielded negative results for Ebola," said DFA spokesperson Charles Jose in a text message on Saturday.

He said the Filipino sailor was instead found to be suffering only from flu virus.

"He was diagnosed with the flu," said Jose.

Earlier, reports came out that a Filipino sea-based worker in Togo was suspected of suffering from the Ebola virus disease.

It comes amid the Ebola outbreak in West African countries Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Nigeria.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are already 2,473 people that had been infected with Ebola, including 1,350 who died.

Earlier, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has decided to prohibit Filipino sailors from leaving their ships when making a stop in the ports of affected areas.

The measure was initiated in order to limit the possibility of their exposure or contamination with the EVD. (HDT/Sunnex)
