MANILA -- A senator wants a congressional investigation on educational field trips being organized by different schools following last week's drowning incident in Bulacan that killed seven students.

Senator Aquilino Pimentel III said Sunday he would invite Bulacan State University (BSU) officials to shed light on the incident in Madlum River in San Miguel, Bulacan.

Owners of a private tour company contracted for the field trip will also be summoned to know if there have been lapses by the tour guides that led to the accident.

Pimentel said field trips are becoming expensive, wherein students in Luzon are required to go to the Visayas and Mindanao and vice versa.

“Let's see if there is a racket involved here," Pimentel said.

He also wants to know the importance of such outdoor activities, the safety measures and precautions being undertaken by school authorities concerned and the tour operators.

In the meantime, Pimentel urged school authorities to observe a moratorium on field trips while investigations are conducted to determine the integrity of so-called "tour operators." (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
