MANILA -- Former congressman Dennis Roldan has been sentenced by a Pasig City court to life in prison for the kidnapping of a three-year-old Filipino-Chinese boy in 2005.
Roldan, Mitchell Gumabao in real life, was convicted by Judge Rolando Mislang of Pasig Regional Trial Court branch 167 on Tuesday. He was sentenced to suffer the penalty of reclusion perpetua or life imprisonment.
The 53-year-old former politician appeared in court on Tuesday and was immediately brought to New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.
Orlando Salatandre Jr., legal counsel of Roldan, said they will appeal the Pasig RTC ruling before the Court of Appeals.
Aside from Roldan, his co-accused Rowena San Andres and Adrian Domingo were handed the same decision by the court, while Octavio Garces was acquitted of the crime.
Roldan was arrested in 2005 after the successful rescue on the kidnapping of three-year-old boy Kenshi Yu in Cubao, Quezon City. He was jailed for over a year but posted P500,000 bail in 2006.
A former Quezon City representative, Roldan is the father of television personalities Marco and Michele Gumabao. He also serves as a pastor at Jesus Christ the Life Giver Ministry.
Roldan is currently included in the cast of GMA’s evening series, "My Destiny" where he plays as the father of the male main character played by Tom Rodriguez. (With Third Anne Peralta/Sunnex)
