SUBIC BAY FREEPORT ZONE -- Filipino peacekeepers set to return home from Ebola-hit Liberia must undergo a 30-day observation period, said the Department of Health (DOH).

DOH spokesperson Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy said there remains the need for them to be placed under close observation from the doctors of the Philippine National Police (PNP) or Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

"They should still be observed for 30 days for possible Ebola symptoms," Lee Suy said

The DOH official said that while the PNP and AFP doctors are the ones tasked to observe the peacekeepers, they will remain in close coordination with them.

Over the weekend, the Philippine government ordered the 115 members of the Philippine peacekeeping mission in Liberia to return home in a bid to avoid acquiring the dreaded Ebola virus disease (EVD).

On the other hand, Lee Suy said the Filipino peacekeepers need not to be placed under quarantine just like returning Filipinos from Sierra Leone.

"We need not to quarantine them. As in there is no need to isolate, just like the overseas Filipinos," said Lee Suy.

Last month, the DOH placed under close observation 15 overseas Filipinos that returned home from Sierra Leone.

The 15 have since been cleared of the Ebola virus disease by the DOH. (HDT/Sunnex)
