THE ALS "Ice Bucket Challenge" craze has the reached the House of Representatives as Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas Jr. accepted on Thursday the challenge made by Justice Secretary Leila de Lima.

Tupas had himself doused with a pail ice cold water in the presence of media and House employees in the Batasan Complex grounds.

The chairman of the House committee on justice joined the calls to raise awareness on the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a degenerative nerve ailment also known as the Lou Gehrig's disease.

"I was challenged to take it and I accepted the challenge for a worthy cause… I will also donate 100 dollars to ALS Foundation," Tupas said.

The Iloilo representative vowed to ask his other colleagues to join him and help raise funds for persons afflicted with ALS.

Tupas, who was nominated by de Lima together with Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and rehabilitation czar Secretary Panfilo Lacson, challenged newly appointed Supreme Court Associate Justice Francis Jardeleza and Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to take the ice bucket craze.

But Sereno seems not interested to do it.

"My husband and I adopted a policy of quiet giving. My giving will be quiet, so my answer will also be quiet," she told reporters.

Sereno and Tupas are members of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), which vets nominees to the judiciary and the Office of the Ombudsman and Deputy Ombudsman. (with Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
