ZAMBOANGA CITY (Updated) -- Three people were killed and eight others were wounded in a jailbreak in Siocon town, Zamboanga del Norte Friday night.
The Zamboanga Peninsula regional police identified the fatalities as Jail Officer 1 (JO1) Ryanbel Bagun and inmates Ruel Humoc and Preciouso Humoc, both murder suspects.
The report said Bagun was returning an inmate, who was not named, to his cell around 8 p.m. when one of the detainees grabbed the guard's firearm on the waist as the latter opened the door.
The detainee thereafter shot to death jail guard Bagun.
A shootout ensued after policemen responded, leaving the two Humocs dead.
The fighting also resulted in the wounding of Police Officer 3 (PO3) Romel Jay Hachuela, PO1 Paul Tombic, JO2 Roldan Felizarta, JO2 Patric Galvez, and inmates Rene Boy Humoc, Lito Magsayo, Ryllmark Canonio and Zenaid Insu.
Several inmates escaped during the incident but were recaptured after authorities conducted a manhunt operation, the report said.
The report said more policemen and Army Special Forces soldiers responded "and the said jailbreak failed to succeed."
The bodies of the slain victims were turned over to their families while the wounded were brought to a hospital for treatment. (VR/Sunnex)
