CEBU CITY -- Mayor Michael Rama declared on Monday afternoon no classes in all levels in both public and private schools due to bad weather brought by a low pressure area (LPA) over Visayas.

The City Government will deploy 10 buses in major public utility jeepney routes to ferry stranded passengers starting 3 p.m. Monday.

The state weather bureau reported that flashfloods and landslides threaten some parts of the Visayas, including Cebu province, due to the trough of the LPA off Northern Samar.

As of 10 a.m. Monday, the LPA was located at 720 kilometers (km) east of Catarman, Northern Samar.

In an interview, weather forecaster Alvin Pura said the weather disturbance will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains in the regions of Eastern and Central Visayas.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rains and thunderstorms will prevail over the regions of Western Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula.

"Residents in these areas and local disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned are advised to be alert and take all the necessary precautionary measures and monitor updates on this weather disturbance," the weather bureau's advisory added.

Pura said they are also monitoring a new cloud cluster east of Mindanao that is expected to intensify into LPA.

He said once the weather disturbance also has a high chance to intensify into a tropical cyclone because it is in the sea.

The next tropical depression to enter the country will be locally named "Kanor." (with PNA/Sunnex)
