Group: PPPs caused price hikes

MANILA -- A militant group said on Thursday that the dangers brought by public-private partnerships (PPPs) are now felt with the recent increases in toll fees and transportation fares.

“Toll ways and railways are examples of public-private partnerships in the past. These so-called partnerships inevitably lead to increases in fares and fees because of the profit motivation of the private partners,” said Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Secretary General Renato Reyes Jr.

The Aquino government itself will be implementing its own PPP program and has in fact earmarked P15 billion for such projects in 2011.

“The policy itself has not protected consumers from price increases. The reverse has in fact happened, with price hikes now being inevitable,” Reyes added. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
