Lawmaker hits PAL bankruptcy claim

MANILA -- The claim of Lucio Tan, owner of flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL), that he is losing his empire while being listed as the second richest man in the country is "an epitome of greed", a lawmaker said Wednesday.
"All these statistics of Tan’s enormous wealth from his diversified holdings tell the story of a man riding to the top out of amassing mind-boggling wealth by exploiting and oppressing his workers,” said Gabriela Women's Party Representative Emmi De Jesus.
Tan is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PAL, whose more than 2,600 employees belonging in the non-core units are threatened by a layoff after the Department of Labor and Employment approved the proposal.
De Jesus promised to oblige the committee on labor, when the House of Representatives resumes its session on November 8, to immediately investigate the condition of PAL’s workers. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
