Box maker, sports car owner slapped with evasion

MANILA -- Tax evasion cases worth P414.82 million were filed with the Department of Justice on Thursday against a box manufacturer and an owner of a sports car.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) said Megapack Container Corporation and its president, Salvador Lara, evaded taxes and failed to supply the bureau with correct and accurate information in its tax returns for 2009 and 2010.

Deal reached in Catholic lawsuit

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — A lawsuit filed against a U.S. diocese and its bishop by a girl who was 2 when a priest took pornographic photos of her has tentatively been settled for $600,000, a lawyer for the girl said Wednesday.

The Catholic church continues to struggle to handle abuse claims across the country. This case comes after the church paid $10 million to settle earlier, unrelated claims against the diocese and the bishop promised such abuse wouldn't happen again.

Comelec takes 7-hour break

MANILA -- The Commission on Elections, sitting as the national board of canvassers (NBOC), decided to take a seven-hour break with former Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) chairperson Grace Poe still leading the senatorial contest after counting 54 certificates of canvass on Wednesday.

Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantes announced the suspension of the canvassing at 12 a.m. and will resume at 7 a.m. on Thursday with the hope of proclaiming at least half of the 12 winning senators later in the evening.

Bombings kill at least 32 in Iraq

OVER 1,000 migrant Filipinos in 25 countries did not take advantage of the chance to select 12 new senators and a party-list group in the 2013 midterm polls, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Wednesday.

These Filipinos are located in Colombia, Netherlands Antilles, Suriname, Venezuela, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia, Latvia, Burundi, Congo, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Zambia.

Comelec to local canvassers: Submit Senate results today

Palace to opposition guvs: Supporting Aquino's reforms to their benefits also

Poe of Team PNoy is still on top with 1,520,880 votes culled from 21 areas in the country. She was followed by Loren Legarda and Francis Escudero. Nancy Binay, who was fifth in earlier tally, has dislodged Alan Peter Cayetano for the fourth spot.

Proclamation of Cebu City vice mayor delayed anew

CEBU – The City Board of Canvassers suspended the canvassing of election returns of the three remaining precincts delaying the proclamation of vice mayor and three councilors.

Lawyer Ferdinand Gujilde, chairman of the board of canvassers, said replacement of the three defective CF cards has yet to arrive from Manila on Wednesday or Thursday.
