MANILA – The Philippine Airlines (PAL) said thousands of young graduates are more than willing to join them despite the pronouncements of its disgruntled flight crew that they are receiving below-average compensation.

Jose Uybarreta, PAL vice president for human resources and development, said the company received close to 20,000 job applications for the first nine months of the year, where 9,000 were seeking cabin crew positions.

PAL however refused to divulge the exact number of flight attendants they are planning to hire this year.

“PAL recently added two brand new ‘Extended Range’ Boeing 777-300s to its fleet of wide-body aircraft. This led to the promotion of senior cabin crew and opened the door for the hiring and training of new ones,” he said.

The Flight Attendants' and Stewards' Association of the Philippines claimed that an entry-level flight attendant only receives a monthly salary of P8,605 but the airline said that the actual pay ranges from P33,000 to P75,000.

A domestic cabin attendant gets P34,619 to P37,619 a month, including productivity pay, transportation allowance and rice allocation while an international cabin attendant receives P50,741 to P60,136.(Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
