MANILA -- Joy Cortes Delos Reyes, Malaya Business Insight editor-in-chief, passed away on Friday. He was 59.

His remains will lie in state in his home in Balete, Aklan until May 6.

Man shot in Ermita

CEBU -- A 25-year-old man was shot dead Friday morning in Barangay Ermita, Cebu City, police said.

According to the homicide section of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), the victim, Argie Nodalo, 25, sustained gunshot wounds on his left ear, chest and waist.

Senatorial bet loses bid to stop P14-B reclamation project

MANILA -- Administration senatorial bet Cynthia Villar has failed to stop the planned implementation of a P14-billion reclamation project in Manila Bay, which she feared can cause environmental damage and expose residents to severe flooding.

In rejecting Villar's petition for writ of kalikasan, the Court of Appeals Third Division said the former lawmaker had no legal or factual basis to back her allegations.

2 NBI men relieved over Mancao’s escape

CHARGES have been filed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) against two of its members who were blamed for the escape of murder suspect Cezar Mancao from the agency's detention cell on Thursday.

NBI Director Nonnatus Rojas said relieved jail guards Pablo Remalante and Ibrahim Musa faced inquest proceedings at the Manila Prosecutor's Office on Friday and responded to allegation of infidelity in the custody of prisoners, an offense punishable with imprisonment under Article 224 of the Revised Penal Code.

Asia stocks rise on US jobs data

BANGKOK — Asian stock markets rose Friday, finding renewed strength from a fall in US jobless benefit claims and an interest rate cut by the European Central Bank (ECB) intended to boost the region's ebbing economy.

Investors jittery over the state of the US economy took heart from a US Labor Department report that said applications for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in more than four years. That calmed fears that intensified Wednesday following the release of reports showing lackluster hiring and factory output.

Peso touches 40-level in morning trade

MANILA -- The Philippine peso touched the 40-level against the dollar in the morning trade Friday, a day after the country received its second investment grade rating from a major debt watcher.

It opened the trade at 41-flat, way better than the previous day’s start of 41.25.

Remains of Boston Marathon bombing suspect claimed

BOSTON — The body of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was the subject of a massive manhunt and died in a gunbattle with police, was claimed on Thursday.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Terrel Harris said a funeral home retained by Tsarnaev's family picked up the 26-year-old's remains.

2 OFWs removed from Saudi-owned US residence

McLEAN, Virginia — Immigration officials have removed two Filipino domestic workers from a Virginia home owned by the government of Saudi Arabia as part of an investigation into a report of human trafficking.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Brandon Montgomery said Thursday that the agents went to the home in McLean on Tuesday. Fairfax County police were called in to help.

Huge cache of weapons found in Negros town mayor’s home

MANILA -- Police operatives seized more than 70 firearms from the house of Pulupandan town mayor Magdaleno Peña in Negros Occidental on Thursday afternoon.

Peña was not around when the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and Special Action Force searched his residence by virtue of an order issued by Quezon City Judge Maria Filomena Singh.
