15 die in bus accident in India

SRINAGAR, India — Police said a passenger bus has fallen into a gorge in the mountainous Indian portion of Kashmir, killing at least 15 people. At least 17 others were injured.

Police officer Anil Mangotra said the driver apparently lost control at a sharp bend on a highway near Ramban, a town nearly 150 kilometers (95 miles) south of Srinagar, the main city in Indian-held Kashmir.

Aquino’s 3rd Sona remains not a holiday

Dolphy laid to rest

MANILA (2nd Update, 2:50 p.m.) -- Comedy King Rodolfo Vera “Dolphy” Quizon Sr. was laid to rest Sunday afternoon at the Heritage Park in Taguig City.

Dolphy's remains left the chapel at 2 p.m. and the interment rites led by Rev. Fr. Larry Paraon followed.

Stalled Chinese warship rescued from disputed shoal

MANILA (3rd Update, 1:16 p.m.) -- Chinese Navy ships safely removed one of China’s warships Sunday from a disputed shoal off the western Philippines where it had run aground while on a security patrol.

The warship will sail back to port with minor damage, and no crew member was injured, Chinese Embassy spokesman Zhang Hua said in a statement.

PRC renews call for more blood donation

WITH the Department of Health (DOH) admitting to be concerned over the rise in dengue cases, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) is calling on the public anew to become blood donors.

In a statement, PRC Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang said they are hoping the public would heed their call to become blood donors to help save others’ lives.

Priest: DOH order shows RH bill not needed

A MEMBER of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said there is no need for the Reproductive Health (RH) bill as shown by the issuance of the Department of Health (DOH) of an order containing provisions similar to the controversial measure.

CBCP–Episcopal Commission on Family and Life (ECFL) Executive Secretary Fr. Melvin Castro said Sunday that the DOH Administrative Order 2012-009 is one more proof that the RH bill is not needed anymore since the department is already capable of addressing the supposed problems that are to be solved by the bill.

Piatco’s claim not to pay Japanese firms denied

THE Supreme Court (SC) denied the petition of the Philippine International Air Terminals Company Inc. (Piatco), builder of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, not to follow a London court ruling that affirmed compensation for its Japanese contractors.

In a decision penned by Associate Justice Diosdado Peralta, the SC dismissed the petition of Piatco seeking to nullify the decisions of the Court of Appeals (CA) and Makati City Regional Trial Court 143 which heard the enforcement of the ruling of the London tribunal.

Smartmatic opposes visit to warehouse

CITING impropriety, Smartmatic International opposed the requests of prospective bidders for the P112-million lease of warehouse project of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to visit their Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines warehouse in Cabuyao, Laguna.

According to the Bid Bulletin 1 of the Comelec–Bids and Awards Committee (BAC), there were some inquiries during the recently conducted pre-bid conference for the possibility of a visit in the warehouse.

Government ready to assist ‘distressed’ Chinese ship

MANILA (Updated 10:40 a.m.) -- The Philippine government expressed readiness to assist the distressed Chinese vessel that ran aground at the Hasa-Hasa shoal, despite the dispute in the South China Sea.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said in a text message Saturday night that the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Philippine Navy will assist the beleaguered Chinese ship just 60 nautical miles from the western Philippine island of Palawan.
