DHAKA (Updated) – At least 121 workers have been killed in a blaze that gutted a garment factory on the outskirt of Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, fire service officials said Sunday.
The death toll soared to at least 121 as rescue workers recovered 112 bodies Sunday, fire brigade director general Brigadier General Abu Nayeem Mohammad Shahidullah told AFP.

RAMALLAH -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Saturday that upgrading the Palestinian status in the UN to a non-member state is the last chance for making peace.
“The Palestinian side is ready to return to the negotiating table as soon as getting the Palestinian state's membership," Abbas told students whom he met at his West Bank headquarters,” he said, adding “This might be the last chance for making peace in the Middle East before time goes.”

MANILA -- A former security officer of the late Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo is the topnotcher of the National Police Commission (Napolcom) Police Executive Service Eligibility (PESE) written examination conducted last August 26.
In a statement, the Napolcom said Police Superintendent Rodolfo Castro Jr., Robredo's security aide for a year until his death on August 18, garnered the highest score among the 372 senior officials of the Philippine National Police (PNP) who took the PESE written exam. The agency however did not disclose the test scores.

MANILA -- One of the four Filipino oil workers, who was seriously injured in last week's explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, passed away Saturday morning, the Philippine Ambassador said.
“The embassy has been informed of the sad news that one of our kababayans injured in the November 16 incident in the Gulf of Mexico, Avelino L. Tajonera, passed away early this morning in the presence of his loved ones,” Ambassador Jose Cuisia, Jr. said. "The Filipino nation joins his family in grieving over their loss.”

LOS ANGELES — Halle Berry's ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry was arrested for investigation of battery after he and the Oscar-winning actress' current boyfriend got into a fight at her California home, police said.
Aubry, 37, was booked Thursday for investigation of a battery, a misdemeanor, and released on $20,000 bail, according to online jail records. He's scheduled to appear in court Dec. 13.
