PRC official dismissed from service
Friday, May 17, 2013 - 12:56 p.m.MANILA -- Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales punished on Thursday an official of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) with dismissal from the service for demanding and receiving grease money for the rentals being paid by the agency for its office in Baguio City.
Morales also forfeited the retirement benefits and barred PRC Commissioner Alfredo Po from entering government service again after he was found guilty of grave misconduct and violated the law on ethical standards for state employees and officials.
UN: 3 peacekeepers abducted between Israel-Syria
Friday, May 17, 2013 - 12:33 p.m.UNITED NATIONS -- Armed men broke into a UN outpost in a buffer zone separating Israel and Syria and abducted three UN military observers, the UN peacekeeping chief said Thursday.
Herve Ladsous told a group of reporters that the unarmed observers were held by the Syrian men for about five hours and released unharmed Wednesday morning.

Escudero returns to 3rd spot
Friday, May 17, 2013 - 09:39 a.m.MANILA -- Re-elected Senator Francis Escudero snatched the third place again after fellow Senator Alan Peter Cayetano took his place in the previous batches of tally released by the National of Board of Canvassers (NBOC).
Before the NBOC suspended its session to Friday morning, Escudero received 8,652,216 votes or over 50,000 votes higher than Cayetano’s 8,597,603 on late Thursday.

Poe vows to pursue dad’s dreams for country

10 tornadoes whip through Texas; 6 dead
Friday, May 17, 2013 - 04:02 a.m.GRANBURY, Texas -- Ten tornadoes touched down in several small communities in Texas overnight, leaving at least six people dead, dozens injured and hundreds homeless. Emergency responders were still searching for missing people Thursday afternoon.
The National Weather Service gave a preliminary estimate of Wednesday night's violent system, saying a tornado in Granbury had wind speeds between 166 mph (267 kph) and 200 mph (320 kph). Other tornadoes damaged nearby Cleburne and Millsap.
Taiwan military holds drills amid row
Thursday, May 16, 2013 - 11:59 p.m.MANILA -- Taiwan's military conducted Thursday exercises in waters between Taiwan and the Philippines, close to the spot where Filipino coast guard personnel opened fire on a Taiwanese fishing vessel last week, killing a 65-year-old-crew member.
Two Lafayette frigates, one Kidd-class destroyer, two missile boats and assorted Mirage and locally produced jet fighters took part in the drill, underscoring Taiwan's anger over the incident, which has dominated local media coverage for the past week.

Labella, runningmate of reelected Mayor Mike Rama, defeated incumbent Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young of the Bando Osmena Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK) by only 184 votes, official results released by the City Board of Canvassers (CBOC) showed.
Comelec proclaims 6 senators
Thursday, May 16, 2013 - 08:22 p.m.MANILA (Updated) -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC), proclaimed Thursday night the top six senatorial candidates at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.
The new senators are Team PNoy's Grace Poe-Llamanzares with 6,978,111 votes so far, Loren Legarda (6,405,625), Alan Peter Cayetano (5,989,369), Francis Escudero (5,944,573), Juan Edgardo Angara (5,593,601) and United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) member Nancy Binay (5,787,423).
