94-year-old grandma may be world’s oldest masters graduate (3:25 p.m.)
CANBERRA, Australia — A 94-year-old great-great-grandmother who left school aged 12 could be the world’s oldest university masters graduate, her supervisor said Friday as he urged her to continue her studies to a PhD.
University of Adelaide graduate Phyllis Turner was awarded her masters degree in medical science this week at a ceremony in her home town of Adelaide surrounded by generations of offspring.
Her supervisor Prof. Maciej Henneberg said discussions with international colleagues and Internet research led him to believe Turner is the oldest person in the world to achieve a masters degree.
Henneberg said he had urged Turner to continue her studies to earn a doctorate, but she had so far declined his offer of help.Turner said she felt she could achieve a PhD but her family wanted her to take life easy.
“The only trouble is, I’m short of years,” she said. (AP)
