Arroyo grants Estrada pardon (6 p.m.)
MANILA — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo granted Thursday an executive clemency to former President Joseph Estrada, who was convicted for plunder, and restored his civil and political rights.
The forfeitures imposed by the Sandiganbayan however remain imposed in full, including all writs and processes, in pursuance of the anti-graft court’s order except for the bank accounts he owned before his tenure as president.
The executive clemency takes effect upon Estrada’s acceptance of the pardon.
The executive clemency was anchored on the administration’s policy of releasing inmates who have reached the age of 70. Estrada himself is already 70 years old and has been under detention for six and half years.
Estrada also publicly committed to no longer seek any public position or office. (Sunnex)
