Bomb chemical seized (6:28 p.m.)
MANILA – Quezon City policemen have recovered ammonium nitrate, a chemical used in the manufacture of improvised bomb, at a bus terminal in the city last week, the top police official of the city reported on Tuesday.
Senior Superintendent Magtanggol Gatdula said the ammonium nitrate was found by his men inside a bag that was left or abandoned at an eatery stall at the bus terminal in Cubao last October 25.
Gatdula immediately doused reports that the ammonium nitrate would be used in the manufacture of a bombing in Quezon City. He said the recovered bomb component may be used in blast fishing.
The incident took place six days after the bloody explosion at the Glorietta mall in Makati City that left 11 people dead and scores injured. Police said the explosion could have been caused by industrial accident or a combination of diesel and methane gas.
Authorities said while there are strong indications that the explosion was likely an industrial accident, they were not discounting the possibility that it was caused by bombs planted by unscrupulous people or terrorists. (VR/Sunnex)
