Palace asks rallyists to spare no-to-strike drivers (10:40 a.m.)
MANILA — The Malacañang appealed to rallyists who will be joining the transport strike on Tuesday to spare drivers who would opt to continue to ply during the 24-hour demonstration around Metro Manila.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo said the government would be providing public transportation through the “Libreng Sakay” program on March 11 to mitigate the impact of transport strike.
Fajardo said concerned agencies like the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the police and military is taking care of the preparations like the deployment of military trucks and buses to areas affected by the strike.
“We appeal to the transport sector to maintain peace and order during the conduct of their strike and not to force those who do not wish to join them,” she said.
Fajardo said the government continues to hold dialogue with the transport sector and has maintained an open communication with them to try to address their concerns.
The Pinag-Isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston) would lead the Metro Manila-wide strike on March 11 to show their continued opposition to the single-ticketing system which they said results in extortions, and to protest the latest round of pump prices hike over the weekend.
Total Philippines last Sunday increased prices of gasoline, diesel, and kerosene by P0.50 per liter following the same price hike implemented by Flying-V, Eastern Petroleum, and Unioil Petroleum Philippines; and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation and Chevron Philippines (Caltex) last Saturday.
