Comelec commences filing of candidacy in Armm (12 p.m.)
MANILA — Candidates for the August 11 elections in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) can now file their certificate of candidacy (COC) as the 100-day election period officially starts on Wednesday.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the region will start accepting COCs from candidates who are aspiring to become the regional governor, vice governor and members of the legislative assembly until midnight of June 4.
Banned activities starting May 28 up to September 10 are alteration of precincts or establishment of new precincts, transfer of government employee assignments, maintenance of strike forces, use of personal bodyguards and suspension of any elective official.
Armm has about 1.6 million registered voters. They are to elect one governor, one vice governor and three district legislative members for each of the 10 districts.
Likewise, the poll body will enforce a gun ban in the area which will also take effect at the beginning of the election period.
The 2008 poll is set to implement the country’s first automated election by using two new technologies, the Optical Mark (OMR) Reader and the Direct Recording Electronic (DRE).
ARMM is composed of six provinces namely, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Shariff Kabunsuan and Maguindanao. (FP/Sunnex)
