Soldier killed in Negros Oriental clash (8:42 a.m.)
DUMAGUETE CITY — One soldier was reportedly killed in a clash between government troops and the rebel group the New People’s Army (NPA) in Sitio Avocado, Barangay Talalac, Sta. Catalina.
The commanding officer of the 79th Masaligan Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army confirmed that one of his soldiers was killed in an encounter Tuesday with the members of the NPA.
Lieutenant Colonel Erwin Bernard Neri, in a telephone interview, however, refused to name the casualty as they have yet to inform the soldier’s parents.
The body of the slain soldier was brought to a funeral home in Sta. Catalina town.
They still have to ascertain the number of killed and wounded NPA men as the rebel group scampered away toward the forested area of Barangay Talalac bringing along with them their wounded comrades.
The government troops have recovered assorted firearms and ammunitions from the captured rebel camp. They also saw personal things and subversive documents right after the encounter. (Victor L. Camion/Sunnex)
