Bomb blast wounds 11 outside air force base (11:44 a.m.)

MANILA - Police say a homemade bomb exploded outside an air base in Mindanao, wounding at least 11 people and damaging a lawmaker’s office in a nearby building.

Police Chief Superintendent Jaime Caringal says the bomb went off Thursday outside the Edwin Andrews Air Base in Zamboanga city.

He says it apparently was concealed in one of several bags of civilian commuters waiting for the flight of a C130 cargo plane.

Caringal says nobody has claimed responsibility for the powerful blast, which damaged a number of parked cars and a lawmaker’s office in a two-story building.

Zamboanga has been targeted by al-Qaida-linked militants in the past, but Caringal said it was difficult to immediately say who was responsible. (AP)
