Gunman holds bus passengers hostage, wounds 2 in Pampanga (6 p.m.)
MANILA — A man armed with a gun and a knife held several bus passengers hostage and shot and wounded at least two of them Thursday in Pampanga province, a police official said.
The bus was on a busy highway passing through Lubao township in Pampanga province, when the gunman opened fire, causing panic among the passengers, said provincial police Senior Superintendent Keith Singian.
Bus driver Raphy Pascual said he heard two shots and immediately pulled over and opened the bus doors to let passengers escape.
He said he and his conductor helped out a man with a bullet wound in the stomach. Another wounded man was later freed by the gunman.
Pascual said he estimated about 10 passengers were still inside the bus when its doors slammed shut - possibly triggered by a passenger accidentally pressing the door control button in the rush to escape. (AP)
