Classes suspended in Luzon typhoon-hit areas (8:16 p.m.)

MANILA — Classes on Monday have been suspended in the grade school and high school levels in Luzon areas hit by typhoon Frank, said Office of the Civil Defense Deputy Administrator and deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez.

Education secretary Jesli Lapus also said that local government and school authorities could exercise discretion to suspend classes depending on actual conditions in a locality.

“The safety of our students and teachers shall remain paramount,” he said in a statement forwarded by Golez.

Lapus said: “in general, suspension of classes shall continue to be governed by existing policies based on Storm Signal levels.”

Among the areas where classes have been suspended are Metro Manila, Cavite, Rizal, Batangas, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, La Union, Benguet and Ilocos Norte. (JMR/Sunnex)
