MILF rebel killed in Sarangani clash (5:10 p.m.)
MANILA — A Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebel died following a firefight with Army soldiers in Maitum town in Sarangani Province Wednesday morning, a military official said.
Major Armand Rico, spokesman for the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom), said the fierce fighting erupted at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday while troops from the 27th Infantry Battalion (IB) were on security patrol.
Quoting initial reports from the field, Rico said EastMinCom commander Anselmo Cunanan ordered the command troops to step up security operations amid reports that groups are out to topple power and communication lines in their area of responsibility.
Rico could not immediately say who initiated the firefight.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Rico said there was still sporadic fighting between the two sides. (VR/Sunnex)
