MMDA told to clean up after ‘Frank’ (10:28 a.m.)

MANILA — At least 150 personnel and more than 20 heavy equipment for flood control and sidewalk clearing operations, have been dispatched by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to the Visayas region to help in the clearing operations in the aftermath of typhoon “Frank.”

MMDA general manager Robert Nacianceno said the MMDA has been ordered by no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to extend assistance to affected families in provinces across the country that were hardest hit by typhoon “Frank.

The President, in a teleconference, ordered MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando to deploy all its men and heavy equipment to clear streets, drainage systems and waterways of debris and garbage.

After receiving the order, the MMDA immediately coordinated with the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) and local officials of the provinces of Aklan, Iloilo, Mindoro, Leyte, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Zambales, Batangas and Bulacan. (AH/Sunnex)
