9 rebels, 2 cops killed in Surigao clash (11:11 a.m.)
MANILA — Nine communist rebels and two policemen were killed while four other policemen were wounded following clashes in Surigao del Norte on Sunday, a military spokesman reported.
Citing initial reports, Major Amand Rico, spokesman of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)’s Eastern Mindanao Command, said the first clash broke out at Claver town around 5:30 a.m. while the other clash at Lapinigan Island occurred around 12:30 p.m.
Rico said the troops were composed of men from the Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion, 42nd Military Intelligence Company and policemen from the Regional Mobile Group.
He said the soldiers and the policemen were tasked to pursue the rebels in the two areas after the communists attacked the municipal police stations in Dapa and General Luna town in Surigao del Sur, on Saturday night.
Rico said after raiding the police stations, the rebels escaped aboard five rubber boats — two of them going to Claver town and the three at the Lapinigan Island. (VR/Sunnex)
