Suspected Campbell killer found guilty (2:16 p.m.)
MANILA — Woodcarver Juan Donald Duntugan, suspect of the killing of US Marine Corps volunteer Julia Campbell at the Batad Rice Terraces, was found guilty beyond reasonable doubt in the Banaue, Ifugao Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 34.
The Batad native will be jailed for 20 years and one day to a maximum of 40 years without parole.
Judge Esther Pisoco-Flor of Banaue, Ifugao RTC Branch 34 cited two aggravating circumstances: “treachery and use of superior strength”, dismissing allegations that the killing was caused by “spur-of-the-moment” anger.
Duntugan was also made to pay P39,674,056.52 in civil liabilities and damage.
Campbell received a blow on the head from Duntugan while the American was trekking on the terraces. Duntugan that time mistook her for his archrival. Her body was discovered buried in a shallow grave 10 days later. (Sunnex)
